The Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra remains one of the world's leading universities according to the latest rankings.
London's Times Higher Education Supplement has named six of Australia's universities in its top 50.
It has ranked the ANU at number 17 - one place lower than last year.
The University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne share a place at number 36.
Also in the top 50 are the University of Queensland, Monash and the University of New South Wales.
Harvard in the United States remains the top university followed by Cambridge in Britain and Yale in the US.
